EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS (1956)

20120430-194753.jpg

In the 1950s, between the atomic age and the space age, nuclear scare-mongering and the fear of little green men taking over the earth dominated Hollywood science fiction. Classic movies like Invaders From Mars and The Blob told chilling tales of the dangers of pushing science and space exploration too far. Inspired by the foo fighter stories told by USAF pilots who witnessed unidentified flying objects over the skies of Europe during the closing stages of the war, Earth Vs The Flying Saucers is a typical post-war space invasion story.

20120430-194349.jpg

The remake wagon continues to roll with news that Sam Raimi will produce a reboot of Tobe Hooper‘s haunted house classic Poltergeist. It’s one of my favourite movies so I’m hoping he won’t disappoint. Here are the sketchy details from Horror-Movies.ca:

BELOW (2002)

20120424-193135.jpg

There are a surprisingly large number of movies about submarines. From Das Boot to Crimson Tide, the claustrophobic confines of an underwater sardine can have been used to great effect by filmmakers eager to tell a story rooted in interpersonal conflict. Crossing the submarine sub-genre with horror, though, is something that’s rarely (if ever) been done before. Haunted ships are a popular device for movies (Ghost Ship, Pirates Of The Caribbean), but haunted submarines? It’s not something I’ve seen before.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 (1986)

20120423-192415.jpg

Tobe Hooper set the bar high for inbred cannibal movies with his notorious 1974 masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An amalgamation of some of America’s most twisted true life horror, including the sickening story of Ed Gein who stitched the skin of his victims together to make his own flesh suit, it was a brutal and disturbing backwoods chiller. That Hooper took more than a decade to follow it up with a sequel, and that it was of such a markedly different tone to the original, has always seemed strange.

MANIAC COP TO GET A PREQUEL

20120419-194421.jpg

Maniac Cop is one of my favourite movies. Like Ronseal, it does exactly what it says on the tin (or the front of the DVD case if you want to be literal about it). It’s about a cop and he’s a maniac. He’s a bit undead as well, but that’s about as far as the plot is expanded beyond the two word title. It’s horror stripped down to its bare bones; the story serving as little more than a device to get the blood flowing.

FROM WITHIN (2008)

20120419-193820.jpg

Jesus freaks are pretty sinister. You know the kind; charismatic preacher with a microphone parades around a stage crying fire and brimstone while his audience erupts into rapturous applause and de riguer amens. Add to that their penchants for heavy personal artillery and an unshakeable belief in a real, physical devil and you’re asking for trouble. It’s a long way from the English country vicar sharing tea with his pensionable congregation.

WILDERNESS (2006)

20120418-185318.jpg

I’m not really the outdoors type. Spending a weekend living in a tent, eating beans out of a tin and shitting in a hole I’ve had to dig myself sounds like pure hell. I’ve been to Leeds Festival and that was enough. I only went to Scouts once so that my mate Si could get a badge for bringing a friend. Camping in the woods seems horrific before you’ve thrown in the psycho-killers and mutants that dominate the wilderness survival sub-genre.
